Lost in the scrum of the Red Sox beating the Yankees in EPIC form last night, was that fact that Jason Varitek ALMOST ended up catching knuckleballs. The long heralded return of Doug Mirabelli was almost not to be. His plane landed about 20 minutes before the game and he needed a police escort to make it to Fenway from Logan in time for the first pitch (that he would have to catch). In this mad rush, Belli had to change in the cop car, didn’t have time for any warm-ups and hardly even got a chance to say “Hello” to anyone in the clubhouse.But he made it. Got a huge standing ‘O’ and didn’t allow a passed ball. Welcome back Belli, sorry about your crazy day.
